Do stretch marks disappear with treatment?
Stretch marks are scars: learn what may improve their appearance, why their stage matters and how to assess a treatment proposal.

A scar with different stages
Stretch marks develop when rapid stretching or shrinking changes the skin’s support structures. Early marks may be red, purple or brown; over time they often become lighter and look different.
Discuss improvement, not erasure
The AAD explains that stretch marks are permanent, although some treatments may make them less noticeable. Response is not uniform. Promising identical skin to before the marks or complete disappearance does not reflect this clinical reality.
Evidence has nuances
Reviews describe topical options and procedures, with outcomes depending on stage and skin type. Studies use different protocols and measurements, making it difficult to declare one technique best for everyone.
Assessment before combining treatments
Ask whether the aim concerns colour, texture or depth and what pigmentation risks apply to your skin. If pregnant or breastfeeding, mention this before using products or considering procedures, even those advertised as natural.
What to look for at follow-up
Request photographs with comparable lighting and agree when changes will be assessed. Distinguish improvement meaningful to you from an expectation of complete erasure. Your preferences and tolerance for recovery and cost should also guide the decision.
