One family, different products

Retinoid is a term for a group of vitamin A derivatives; retinol belongs to that family. Products do not all have the same indication, formulation or availability. Similar names do not make them interchangeable for every skin type.

Why they may be considered

Some retinoids are used for acne, while other products target texture, pigmentation or fine lines. Choice depends on the concern being addressed. Before buying, clarify whether you need a cosmetic or medical treatment with an indication and follow-up.

Irritation changes the plan

Dryness, stinging and peeling can occur. They are not measures of effectiveness or reasons to increase intensity. Inflamed or sensitive skin needs particular care; combining several active ingredients without advice can make the cause of a reaction difficult to identify.

Pregnancy and sun protection

Retinoids should not be used during pregnancy; seek advice before starting if planning pregnancy. Also review sun precautions and other medicines or products you use. Do not copy another person’s frequency or concentration.

The key question

Ask what the goal would be for your skin and how tolerance and response will be assessed. A useful plan explains what to do about irritation, not just which product to buy.
