A response to inflammation

A darker area can remain after a pimple, injury or irritation. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Inflammation can increase melanin production; it does not mean the skin is dirty or needs aggressive cleansing.

A dark spot is not the same as a scar

The AAD explains that a flat mark after acne may be mistaken for a scar. Colour changes and textural changes require different assessments. Looking at the surface helps but cannot replace consultation when uncertainty remains.

Address the cause first

Ongoing breakouts or irritation can produce new dark spots. Identifying and treating the initial problem matters alongside addressing pigment. Squeezing lesions or adding irritating products can prolong the cycle you want to resolve.

Care should avoid further irritation

Sun protection and gentle skincare are part of management. Do not combine fading agents or exfoliants without guidance or stop medicines because you suspect they affect colour. Discuss that possibility with the prescribing professional.

Time and diagnosis matter

Improvement can be slow, and not every dark spot has the same cause. Seek assessment for a changing, concerning or unexpectedly persistent lesion. Consultation helps distinguish residual pigmentation from other problems before choosing treatment.
