Skin care
Why does melasma come back?
Melasma may require ongoing care. Understand the roles of light, irritation and follow-up when discussing a realistic plan for recurrent pigmentation.

A condition that may persist
Melasma produces areas of pigmentation and may last for years in some people. Not every facial dark patch is melasma: confirming the diagnosis matters before choosing a lightening product or repeating a procedure that targets the wrong cause.
Light remains relevant
Sun exposure can trigger or worsen pigmentation. The AAD highlights visible-light protection, especially for darker skin, including tinted sunscreens with iron oxides. Product selection should fit individual skin needs and tolerance.
More irritation is not better treatment
Burning from cosmetics does not prove they are lightening skin. Irritating products may make pigmentation more noticeable. Before combining acids or intensive formulas, review what you use and whether a reaction requires assessment.
A plan needs continuity
Treatment may include medicines and, in selected cases, procedures; there is no single option for everyone. Protection and follow-up help review response, tolerance and maintenance. Initial improvement cannot guarantee that pigmentation will never recur.
What to bring to your consultation
Bring your products, relevant hormonal history and previous treatments. Ask which diagnosis explains the patches, what improvement is expected and how the plan will change if irritation occurs or progress changes.
