Are intense pulsed light and laser the same?

IPL and lasers use light but are not equivalent technologies. Learn what differs and why selection depends on the goal and your skin.

They share light, not identical operation

Intense pulsed light, or IPL, uses a spectrum of light selected through filters. A laser emits light with more specific properties. This distinction matters: devices described as light-based do not all deliver the same treatment.

The indication guides selection

These technologies may address concerns such as hair, pigmentation or visible vessels, depending on the device. Sharing a possible indication does not make them interchangeable. The goal, depth and area characteristics guide the proposal.

Your skin is part of the decision

Selection must consider skin tone, tanning and medical history. Ask which device is proposed and why it suits you. Novelty or another person having the same procedure is not enough to guide selection.

Light also carries risks

Discomfort, burns or pigment changes can occur. Eye protection is part of safety even when treatment is described as non-invasive. The professional should explain preparation, recovery and what to do about an unexpected reaction.

A useful consultation question

Ask for the technology name and the specific purpose of each session. This helps clarify limits and alternatives. Commercial abbreviations alone do not establish that a device suits your concern.
