Skin care
Why does adult acne occur and when should you seek care?
Acne can occur after adolescence too. Learn about associated factors, common skin-care mistakes and signs that it is time to seek medical assessment.

It is not only a teenage concern
Acne can persist or begin in adulthood. It involves blocked follicles, sebum and inflammation. Lesions do not prove poor hygiene; harsher washing alone cannot address the mechanisms involved.
Identify associated factors
Hormonal changes, family history, some medicines and skin or hair products may contribute. If you suspect a prescribed treatment is involved, discuss it with the prescriber. Do not independently stop medicine needed for another condition.
Avoid the irritation cycle
Constantly switching products or picking lesions can worsen the experience and contribute to marks. A non-pore-clogging routine and a consistent plan are preferable to adding ingredients with every breakout. Treatment needs follow-up rather than daily comparisons.
When assessment is useful
Seek assessment for deep or painful lesions, scarring, persistent dark marks or a substantial effect on wellbeing. Also seek advice if previous efforts are not working. During pregnancy or pregnancy planning, check safety before using acne treatment.
Prepare for your consultation
Note when it began, which products you use and any pattern related to menstruation or medicines. Dated photographs may help describe changes without trying to diagnose every lesion at home.
